09h15: Visit Mỹ Sơn holy place
Tour guide will explain some historical legends of the Champa kingdom: the history of the ancient Champa people, the cultural lifestyle, religion and beliefs, the architecture of temples, and the interference of the ancient Champa people. Champa culture with the Hindu culture of Hinduism.
My Son Sanctuary is a heritage complex with the architecture of the ancient Chăm Pa people in Duy Phú commune, Duy Xuyên district, Quảng Nam province. This area has a diameter of about 2km with more than 70 different temples and towers bearing many historical architectural features typical for each development stage of ancient Champa.
Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary, dating from about the 4th century under the reign of King Phạm Hồ Đạt, is a place used to worship the god’s Linga and Shiva. After the next two centuries, the temple burned down in a great fire. And in the 7th century, King Phạm Phạm Chi had to rebuild the temples – relics that still exist today.
Art and architecture through the layout of temples and towers have a great influence on Indian style. The Sanctuary consists of many clusters of towers, the layout of each tower cluster has a main tower (Kalan) in the middle and many small sub-towers surrounding it. Kalan often worships Linga or the idol of Shiva. The front of each cluster of towers is a gate tower (Gopura), followed by the vestibule (Mandapa), the work item that functions as a place to arrange offerings and dance and sing rituals. Next to it is an architecture that always faces north (towards the god of fortune Kuvera), consisting of 1 or 2 rooms, called Kósa Grha, used to store fine sacrifices and food for the gods. The towers are all pyramidal, symbolizing the holy peak of Meru, the residence of the Hindu gods.
In addition, another special impression that makes Mỹ Sơn holy place famous is the brick used to build the ancient towers. The bricks are fired and block cut, then stacked skillfully without the use of any kind of binder. Over the centuries, the Mỹ Sơn sanctuary has not been weathered but only cracked a very small part.
